I'm
a big fan of the World Wide Web and probably use it for about an hour
a day looking for gags and comedy ideas for the Breakfast Show.
I tend to stick to the sites on my favourite places - The Late Show
with David Letterman, Hecklers Online, Inhis.com (a Christian humour
site) and a dozen more gag sites.
The Christian church seem have to taken to the web like no other group
with Church web sites by the thousand, Christian's home pages and
ministries local, national and International.
Although the web is filled with these Christian sites it would be
folly to believe that that it is God's territory, holy ground.
As a Christian I've found many sites that have been a really blessing.
Recently someone e-mailed me the address of a missionary working in a
small Australian town largely inhabited by Aborigines. The work is
growing and I was really enjoyed and certainly inspired me to pray for
the work.
That's why
we launched a web site for our ministry Kingsbridge Ministries. To
look for more people to pray for the evangelistic work that we do, to
let churches and conference organisers know that I've available for
ministry. The site is also developing an online magazine for youth.
However many christian lives have been wrecked by their use of the
internet. The devil is always looking for ways to trip up the people
of God and wreck their lives and testimonies. Pornograpghy has been
wrecking lives for many years. However for man the embarrassment of
going into a shop and buying a top shelf mag has put them off. Others
fearful of being recognised by someone have been over comers not
because of a victorious spirit but because they are scared of being
caught.
The internet gives men and women opportunities to search for such
things without the fear of being caught out.
I'm an AOL subscriber - (now this is interesting). As a family we have
5 screen names. My personal e-mail, one for Rosie my wife and one each
for our two children Owain and Bethan. The fifth is kbministry@aol.com
- the address for Kingsbridge Ministries.
AOL have a member's directory. The only address that I have put on the
directory is kbministry. On it I give my name, directions to the
ministry web site and make a definite statement about being a
Christian. That is the only address on which I receive pornographic
e-mail's. Sometimes it's obvious that they are porn and I delete them,
but it's not always obvious.
When you open the mail there's a hyper link to all sorts of disgusting
offers of online sex.
Only recently a friend who was a pastor had to stand down from the
ministry because of his online activities.
Jesus said 'You have heard that it was said, do not commit adultery.
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his heart.' Matthew 5
27.
This is just what my friend was guilty of doing. He may not have
been able to look at the woman physically or in a picture but when he
saw her name in the chat room and read her words he was committing
adultery with her in his heart.
It was a christian chat room - his time there ended his ministry.
The web, e-mail's and chat rooms are all part of this new computer age
and who says that everyone in a Christian Chat room is a believer.
Time spent logged onto Christian web-sites is no substitute for
prayer, personal worship and reading the word of God.
How often have you heard people say, 'I don't have enough time for the
word or to pray. Yet they are able to spend hours each week surfing
the web.
The web is a great invention. Through it I can keep up with Christian
friend's ministry all over the world. I can talk via instant messenger
to my best friend at Bible college and best man Steve Brown - a pastor
in Florida. However for many the dangers of the internet are one click
away.
In 1 Peter 5 v 8 we read 'Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the
devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to
devour'.
Remember Satan has more than 5 screen names and millions of homepages
on the world wide web!
